First Holy Communion Pictures

My heart is bursting with pride as I sit here. My oldest son has just received Holy Communion for the very first time! He has experienced the joy of receiving the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ! He has officially received his 3rd Sacrament!

When it was time for communion, Lil' Robert approached the altar and bowed before the consecrated host. He told Father Thanh 'Amen' - I Believe - as Jesus was presented to him. Then, Jesus was placed in  Lil' Robert hands and he stepped to the side, made the sign of the cross and returned to his seat - 4 seemingly simple steps that have so much meaning...

Daddy and I had tears in our eyes as we watched. However, Lil' Robert had a grin that I rarely see spread across his face. He knew just how special today is. He understood the importance of receiving Jesus. He showed Daddy and I that he was truly ready for today. That he understood its importance...
Reflecting on this morning, we are so proud. We are joyous. We are grateful.

Lil Robert's First Holy Communion

Tomorrow morning, Lil' Robert will receive his First Holy Communion. From now on, at Sunday (and any other day) Mass, we will no longer have 3 children receiving their special blessing. Instead, we will have a child receiving the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord, along with us. Instead of allowing our oldest to be the Communion line leader, he will stand in front of Daddy and I as we receive the Body and Blood...

My heart is so full of emotion tonight. Tomorrow, my oldest will make, in my opinion, one of his most important of the seven sacraments. Tomorrow will be a day of rejoicing. A day of memories. A day of watching our oldest grow up...
Robert Edwin, III, Mommy and Daddy are so very, very proud of you. We love you and cannot wait to watch you receive Jesus! I am so grateful that your GodParents are here to watch you as well. You know, your Grampy drove over 600 miles be here? Your Grammie wishes she could be here, but will be praying for you. In fact, she called tonight to talk to you, but we had to put you to bed early because you have such a busy weekend! Your Grandma, Aunt Jeanine, and Aunt Sandra, along with your many cousins will also be there to celebrate with you. We are all so very excited!
Robert, we love you so much! Congratulations on receiving your 3rd sacrament!
XOXOXO
**To prepare for tomorrow, he has gone through 2years of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Classes, including a First Holy Communion Retreat. He has also had 8 years of Catholic upbringing and 3 years of Catholic Home Education. **

Lil Robert's Sacrament of Penance

Today was quite the emotional day... Lil Robert made his first confession!

He has been preparing for this day since August, and it is the first step to receiving his First Holy Communion in May - something he can hardly wait to do!

Before making his actual confession, was a little prayer service - complete with songs, a homily, and a Gospel reading. This was followed by an examination of conscience (although we had been going over a much more detailed version!), then a precious performance of the children singing the 10 Commandments. After this, it was time! The poor kiddos looked so very scared as they were split up on the altar and led to their designated priest - I think the look on Robert's face will be forever etched in my memory as he walked towards "his" priest, Fr. Amar!

Lucky for us, not so sure what he thinks - but honestly, I am not worried about that :-), he was in the cry room. Now, those familiar with Christ the King, know that the only thing separating the cry room from the body of the church is a wall of glass! Despite our best efforts, to give him privacy, but that was quite difficult for daddy and I and we found ourselves turning around quite often! All the while, our faces stuck in crazy smiles, while we had huge tears rolling down our cheeks.

Once he was done, we watched him walk out of the cry room, into the church, and to the side, farthest away from us. At first, we were not sure what he was doing, but then we watched as he went into a pew, lowered the kneeler, made the sign of the cross, then folded his hands and bowed his head - he was saying his penance! Daddy and I just sat there in complete awe - our little boy was growing up! As you can imagine, the tears flowed freely once again!

Once he finished, he picked the kneeler up then made his way to us - the grin on his face was absolutely priceless!

Now onto preparation for receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in just 8 short weeks...

Baseball's Never Been Hotter Than The Jacksonville Suns!

Today, we met up with our homeschool group, HomeGrown Homeschoolers, for a field trip/behind the scenes tour of the Jacksonville Suns Stadium! To say that we were excited is quite the understatement :-)

At first, we tried to keep the trip a secret and let it be a huge surprise for them today, BUT I needed some bribery for nap yesterday and told Ms. Hannah. Now, she was under STRICT orders to not tell a soul, but evidently, she is not ready for secrets.... not only did she not take a nap, she also told both brothers within minutes of me telling her. Ugh!

As usual with the Riker Family, we were running late, but luckily, this is common among home schooling families, and well, families in general, so we had plenty of time to spare. This would have been great, but it was a 90* October day - with no breeze. Another UGH!

Before the tour started, we took a group shot of all the kiddos - go figure, my midgets would stand in the very back where they were only visible from side angles!

After the group photo, the tour began - at first it was the boring stuff, but after a bit in the fabulous Florida heat, we made it to the dugout, followed by the indoor batting/pitching/practice area, followed by the Suns weight room and locker room.

After this, we made our way to the main level, right behind home plate.

The kiddos were quite anxious to get to the third floor and after daddy finished taking pictures, we were off. The third floor held the press box (where there was an actual hole in the wall where a ball came flying through the open window and hit the wall - the announcer leaned to the left and kept talking as if nothing happened the entire time!), the crew room for the video guys and scoreboard people, and the suites where you pay too much money to sit in an air conditioned room and watch baseball!

Once this was over, the tour was over, and it was time for lunch - Capri Suns, chips, and hot dogs - what more could a group of hot, sweaty, hungry kiddos ask for?!

After lunch and a few more pictures.....

....it was time to head down the stairs and get home....
.... but Wesley wanted to try and buy some tickets first!

As we were driving home, we saw the Jaguars practicing and as we continued towards the Hart Bridge, we noticed that the road was closed and there were many marines and combat vehicles. Curious, we pulled into a parking lot to watch, only to see a few Marines sitting inside of a tank. We pulled all of the kiddos out of the van and walked over to see what was going on. These gentleman told us that they were setting up the vehicles to show off for the Marine Corps Half-Marathon in the morning, but would LOVE to open up the other tank and give us a private tour!

We were able to watch as they lowered the gate, which was pretty cool. Who would have known that lowering a gate was a two man job?! We were able to see him climb into the drivers seat, instead of opening a door - the kiddos thought that was SO neat! He allowed all of us to walk inside, ask tons of questions, and then he even let the kiddos try on the bullet proof vests and helmets! This poor marine, was in full fatigues, and sat in the fabulous, non-breezy, 90* blazing sun....

We said our thank yous goodbyes and decided that since we had already skipped nap for the day, that we would take the kiddos to Adoration since it was on the way home. Let me just say, I am so very impressed with each of my children. They were so very respectful. The behaved so nicely. There was not a single poor choice made. Lil' Robert for the first time ever, instead of genuflecting in front of the Blessed Sacrament, he laid down prostrate - this brought tears to my eyes as he is going to be receiving this beautiful Sacrament in May of '13.

Once we left the chapel, we walked over to the Rectory to see Grandma, since we had not seen her in a few weeks because of the missions trip to Jamaica, but she was nowhere to be seen. We waited, Robert recited his entire Act of Contrition, Wesley acted like Wesley, and Hannah sat perfectly still. Finally after a good bit, we packed up and left!
It was an incredibly adventurous morning! We all had a great time as a family and made some very, very precious memories!

The 1st Commandment

Robert has begun the preparation to receive his First Penance and First Holy Communion. To do this, he attends CCD Classes at our parish every Wednesday night. Because he is Home Schooled and not in Catholic School, this leaves 1 day a week for his teacher to adequately prepare the students. If you do some basic math, you will realize that between today, September 12, and his First Holy Communion, May 5, there are ONLY 34 Wednesdays - And that is assuming that there are no breaks and that he attends each one (which I assure you he will!) - Each class is 60 minutes. So, in a maximum 2040 minutes, I expect our son to learn and be prepared as best he can be?! I think not! So we have started teaching him here at home. this has been going on for a while now, but we have now have the curriculum the church wishes us to use.....

The other day, Little Robert and I were sitting on the couch working on the Act of Contrition. It begins with the words My God.... After I said this, Little Robert looked at me in shear horror. I asked him what happened and he could not answer. So I continue on with our lesson and ask him to repeat it to me. He gets the first two sentences 100% correct except for the second word - he will not outright refuses to say My God! It is ALWAYS My Gosh.....

I must say, I am one proud mommy! He has that first commandment down!

2012-2013 School Year

We are so very, very excited about school this year! For the first time in 3yrs, as I opened the boxes containing all of the work we need to complete within the next year, I was not overwhelmed. Rather filled with excitement and joy. I sorted each of the kiddos books and placed them in their backpacks - even Wesley has joined in the curriculum fun with his letter, number, shape, and color books - and felt nothing but excitement about the 18lbs of books I was forcefully pushing within! The feeling that this is what my family needs right now is so incredibly nice!

I am not sure what is the cause for the feeling of peace and comfort... I wonder if it is because of our new curriculum (we left Seton and are now using Catholic Heritage Curricula). Or maybe because I am grateful that all 5 of us are excited about school this year. Who knows, but I am beyond happy. Seeing my family excited is so nice! Last year things were a huge struggle - things were black and white - things were boring. I knew if I was bored so were they..... and after this afternoon, I am convinced this was the correct decision for the Riker Family this year!

Also for the first time, I will be teaching 3 different ages, opposed to the 2 of last year. Robert (7) will be entering 2nd grade. Hannah (5) will be entering 1st. Wesley (3) will be doing pre pre-school work. This year will be a lot of work, but I feel so good about this - in fact we have already finished a science lesson and it had more info that our entire science book last year!

We officially start Monday and I will take lots of pictures and will eventually do a post. Until then, it is organizing everything for our first week!

20-year-old pro-life Crossroads walker hit by car and killed Friday morning | LifeSiteNews.com

A decade ago, I had the honor of participating in this. In fact, not only did I grow in my faith and learn so much about myself, I also met my soulmate and husband, Robert.....

I first heard about this tragedy as I was walking into the doctor Friday afternoon with 4 kiddos. My mind still cannot wrap around this tragedy....

A few things to be grateful for: 1. When you are on crossroads, you have NO option but to be spiritually sound. 2. He was praying the Rosary at the time of the incident. 3. He was discerning the priesthood. 4. He is now a martyr for the unborn - giving his life for those he so cares for.... maybe some scared mother read about him and cancelled her spot.....

May or loving and gracious God watch over and bless all of Andrew's family, team mates, and friends. May we all learn from his example and finish his mission for the unborn since he is no longer physically here to do so. May Andrew Moore be flying high with all of the angels and saints....

God bless you, Andrew.

Father Norman Weslin

I was given the unique opportunity to spend 10wks with this incredible man during the summer of 2002.

That summer, my life changed in so many ways. I met the man I call my husband. I walked across the southeast proclaiming the beauty of life one step at a time. I was away from my family for the first time ever. I had recently been diagnosed with depression. My baby brother had been in Heaven only 5months. I made many incredible friendships. I grew in my faith. I met Fr. Norman Weslin........

A few hours ago, I received the phone call informing me of his death. At first I was in complete denial - this incredible man. A man who became my spiritual father. A man who would hear my confessions over and over. A man that would wipe my tears. A man who spoke with me in the middle of the night while I was scared and alone in the ICU that summer after my snake bite. A man who almost concelebrated our Nuptial Mass. A man who meant so much to me... could this man really, truly have left this world?

I know that he is now in Heaven rejoicing with our Heavenly Father. I know that he is holding his wife so closely as it has been just over 30yrs since she died. I know that he is no longer suffering. I know that he is able to look down and see all of the good that he did while on this earth. All of the babies he saved and life's he touched. I know that Heaven has just gained another Saint....

Father Weslin, words cannot express the gratitude I have in my heart for all that you did for me. I always loved hearing your name on the news. I loved hearing all that you did for the unborn. Father, I have wanted to give my children the opportunity to meet you. The opportunity to attend one of your Masses. Both my husband and I love you and miss you dearly. Thank you for all that you did for me during those 10wks...and beyond!
I pray that you are holding your wife close while you both dance the angels.
I rest assured knowing that you are in Heaven and able to hear my prayers and listen to me heart. Please know that my prayers are with you, Father....

Our Last 1st Grade CCD

Well, tonight was Little Robert's final 1st Grade CCD gathering. I survived my first year with him being taught by someone other than myself, and he survived his first year in a true classroom. We owe all of this to Mrs. Yip, his fabulous, faith filled teacher. She truly made these past months an easy transition for all....

This year, all of the kiddies knew what Wednesday night meant - we eat dinner early and bathe immediately after. Then Robert (and most of the time Hannah) get dressed in nice clothes while Wesley puts on his pajamas. Almost always by the time this is done, Daddy is pulling in the driveway ready to grab the big kids and make the journey to Christ the King. Once they leave, Wesley and I would load in daddy's truck and head over to Dairy Queen for an M&M Blizzard and the ever important, glass of water! We would eat our treat and then head home to snuggle until *most of the time*, we both fell into a deep slumber! I adored this time spent 1:1 with my sweet Wesley.

By about 8:30, I would hear the garage door open, shortly followed by the sounds of daddy and 2 kiddos slurping on icees - all while debating some new concept they just learner at CCD! I loved hearing their versions of apologetics! :-)

Once they were inside and the apologetics 101 ended, we would quickly get in pajamas, brush teeth, say prayers, and complete the entire 2.6 million activities in getting the kids to bed every single night! So, on Wednesday nights, they were able to stay up 2.5hrs after their bedtime (and of course, they were up by 5 the next morning, leaving them only 7hrs of sleep :-/) Without fail, they were always so very grumpy the next day, but well worth it!

Sadly tonight was it for the next 3 months. As is the norm with our faith, the year ended with a Mass. Little Robert sat next to HIS Mrs. Yip the entire time. Occasionally, daddy and I would look over to see him looking at her with a huge grin on his face - he is truly in love!

When it came time for the certificates, Little Robert realized that he would be able to go on the STAGE (aka altar!) When Mrs. Yip stood to go up there, he was a bit confused and started to go with her until we stopped him. As she was calling names, Little Robert began to look a bit distraught - he was beginning to think they forgot him. When his name was called, it was beautiful. He was so excited. It took all he had NOT to run up there!

All in all,, I must say that I am so very glad that our first experience with 'school' was incredibly positive and for that we owe all of our gratitude to Mrs. Yip and all of the love she gave to all of us.

Easter Sunday in Pictures (and a few words!)

Easter Sunday was and is always a special day for us. As Catholics, it is one of the most important days for our faith. As a family, it was also the day that our oldest was born - the day that we first became parents.....

It began with a big breakfast followed by Mass with Grandma and the Richmond family, then an egg hunt at home. After that we changed clothes, we headed over to Grandma's where we had another egg hunt and spent the afternoon enjoying Aunt Jeanine, Joshua, Katherine, Jared, Matthew, and Grandma. Daddy cooked hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. It was a laid back, fun, family filled afternoon..... We all had a great time!

Here are the highlights from our egg hunt.....The pics are scattered as I am too tired to organize them right now - maybe later, but probably not!

My Princess
And he finally found the BIG golden egg filled with 3 DVD's
After the hunt!
All of the goodies went into 1 basket because we are a family!

He found this big egg, but it was not the one he wanted so he gave it to Hannah!

Little Robert gave the dead fishes (who are watched over by St. Francis) an egg!
Wesley found a baseball!

We were being mean and making them take pictures BEFORE the hunt....

The big kiddos moved one of the 4 big eggs to a place where Wesley could find it - made me proud!
And he found it!

We were a team as he just did not understand HOW to find the eggs?!?!?!?

I can't get it!
